Inexpressible

wesley joy

1 Peter 1:8-9 “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

That verse says “…joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory…” There truly is joy, despite any circumstance, when we are walking with the Lord.   It is like the thread on a large quilt, woven in and out and around and through the many different layers, holding it all together.   The Joy of the Lord is much like that, weaving in and through all the different layers of our lives giving us strength for each day.  It holds us together when life seems to be unraveling.

That time… You were sitting in the Dr.’s office and you heard words you didn’t want to hear. Your finances were exhausted but you needed more.  Someone you love was suffering and you could not alleviate the hurt.  When you lost someone you loved.  Your job was cut.  When someone broke your heart and you thought your heart would come right out of your chest.  God was always with you.  Deep down through all those different layers of pain and hurt He was still weaving His joy.  The joy of knowing that despite it all… We are not alone.  There is great joy in knowing that one day we will be with the Lord.  This world is only our temporary home. While we are here though, God will provide. He cares about those we love.  He heals the broken-hearted.   He knows, hears and sees your pain and is with you through it all.  That deep down assurance is part of the joy only He can give.

I love these verses we read in 1 Peter 1: 3-9

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.  And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.  So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.  You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.”

Because we can be saved through the death and resurrection of Christ, we can have great joy! Joy in knowing that we have a priceless inheritance! Joy in knowing we are forgiven!  Joy in knowing God is protecting us with His power!  Joy in knowing that these trials are only temporary, but Heaven is eternal!  Despite the things that life throws at us, we can still have that deep down Joy of the Lord.  What a wonderful gift!  So, as we let God continue to weave the different layers of our lives, let’s remain strong, be courageous and remember that there is wonderful joy even on the hardest days.  The Joy of the Lord is our strength!
